All the Original Irons are Back on the Wagon! | Engels Coach Shop
Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles all bring unique challenges. This one was to preserve the rusty irons and make it look 100 years old. Reconstructing with old wood and irons is more difficult than using new materials, but that's what the owner desired. It's been quite the project. Thanks for coming along!

I been watching all of these episodes and I believe you stumbled upon an answer to a question that you name earlier. You found a mystery key screwed to the back board. I believe that the door latch that you just installed was made for a lock. That way the honest thieves would not just walk in when the wagon was set somewhere and no one was around. The key comes in as it was a spare attached to the wagon so if the Shepard did lose the key he had one stashed to get the door open and inside again. Anyway, that’s my thought an if It was my wagon and I lived there that’s what I would have done. Love the shows Thank you!

Hi Dianne and Dave , I've watched ever one of your video's at least twice now, I love them. The last one on the Sheep Wagon had left me wondering about those mystery irons on the back too. Together with the chain hooks above them do you think there may have been a drop down tailgate hinged off a rod between the lower irons just above the floor and folding up between the side boards back there, similar style to your truck tailgate perhaps? Anyway, Cheers Pete from Australia.

I wonder if the rear metalwork had a bar running through it across the back, seems odd that there's hooks above it, eg, drop down door that hinged off the rod or maybe a place for an additional tailgate for hay bales etc which was held up with a chain to the hooks.

That old bandsaw is a great piece. The wide pulleys mean that it was originally in a shop with a centralized power source, either a steam engine or a water wheel, that drove a system of master belts and shafts. There is or was a working waterwheel-driven foundry in Sutter Creek, Caliornia, called the Knight Foundry. All the machinery, hammers, lathes, milling machines are driven by leather belts from the Pelton Wheel, which receives water from the creek.

I love the use of c-clamps and clamps you have to keep material in place until you secure them permanently, you must have a gazillion clamps in your shop for every purpose! To see that heap of junk turn into an amazing sheep wagon is the artisans work of art and skill! Great job Dave! Maybe those irons at the back of the wagon were meant to secure a through rod to give it lateral stability? I suppose one guess is as good as any? Dang, I would love to spend a day at your shop watching a master wainwright/wheelwright at work! My most recent visit to Montana was to the Little Bighorn battlefield site. My wife and I were disappointed that the Seventh Cavalry were disparaged by our “woke” park service guide. My great grandfather passed away in Anaconda working at the mine, having worked as a cook the last few years before he passed away. I love the rich history of our country, so much of those bygone days is being pushed out of memory and knowledge, your restoration of these important artifacts keeps the past alive in our hearts and minds.
